A Federal High Court sitting in Yenagoa has invalidated the governorship primary election of the All Progressives Congress, APC, in Bayelsa State held on September 4th, 2019, for Saturday’s governorship election in the state.
The court, presided over by Justice Jane Inyang, ruled that the party failed to adhere to party rules and guidelines in conducting the primary election.
In the over two-hour judgement,Justice Inyang said the Returning Officer for the exercise, Emmanuel Ocheje, who announced the result was not recognized by law to do so. The court said the assignment should have been carried out by the Chairman of the APC Primary Election Committee, who is also the Governor of Yobe.
Some chieftains of the party including Heineken Lokpobiri, who reacted to the ruling expressed dissatisfaction over the verdict and used the opportunity to call on their supporters to remain calm as they assured that the APC will still be on the ballot paper on election day.
The Director General of the APC campaign organisation for the governorship election in the state, Seiyefa Brisibe, has also appealed to party supporters not to panick over the court ruling as he assured that the verdict will not affect the party’s participation in Saturday’s exercise.
