President Muhammadu Buhari has ordered the Service Chiefs to immediately identify criminals whose activities have led to heightened insecurity in different parts of the country and their sponsors with a view to taking them out.
Terrorists and bandits operating in parts of the country especially, the Northeast and Northwest, are regularly launching attacks targeting security operatives and civilians particularly students who are being abducted for ransom.
Gun attacks are also being launched on security agents in parts of the Southeast where policemen and soldiers have been killed in recent weeks. Also, armed kidnappers and robbers are regularly operating in the Southwest leading to agitations by cessionist groups and other concerned individuals on the seeming helplessness of the security agencies to check the trend.
The president recently changed the Service Chiefs after a long outcry by Nigerians.
The National Security Adviser, Major-General Babagana Monguno (rtd.), told State House correspondents on Tuesday that the president at a meeting earlier in the day directed the security chiefs to identify masterminds of banditry and kidnappings as well as their sponsors and take them out.
Monguno quoted Buhari as saying at the meeting inside Aso Villa that the situation where the armed forces are reactionary rather than being proactive to criminal acts will no longer be tolerated.
The president met with the Service Chiefs ahead of his two-week medical trip to London, United Kingdom on Tuesday.
